The Princessehof houses a splendid collection of fine ceramics that includes superb art nouveau and elegant Chinese porcelain, as well as work by artists such as Picasso. In addition to events showcasing objects from its own collection the museum also organises special exhibitions. The Princessehof is also home to Leeuwarden’s finest gift shop. Like the museum itself, it specialises in ceramics, selling everything from beautiful vases to the very latest design. There’s something for everyone. The museum is located in an 18th-century palace that once belonged to Maria Louise van Hessen-Kassel, Princess of Orange-Nassau and ancestor to our monarch. The Princessehof is situated at a beautiful and convenient location in the historical centre of Leeuwarden.
Museum Belvédère is the outstanding museum for modern and contemporary art by Frisian artists and their kindred spirits in The Netherlands and abroad. It is beautifully situated in the Museum park, near the historic estate ‘Landgoed Oranjewoud.’ The museum café offers a splendid view of the Grand Canal, which is the axis of the new gardens. The museum park ‘Landgoed Oranjewoud’ was laid out in 2004 between the historic estate of Oranjewoud and the Belvédère Museum. The present estate dates from the nineteenth century. The park is a modern version of the old baroque garden. The promenades on both sides of the grand canal have been restored and are flanked by parcels of copse, surrounded by water. It is an ecologically rich area, with various bank biotopes.
