Leeuwarden and Friesland provide a special setting for the European Capital of Culture 2018: with its four national parks, two Unesco World Heritage sites, eleven cultural-historical cities, the Wadden islands and lakes.
The rich history of this part of the Netherlands has been exceptionally well-preserved. The Frisian Capital of Leeuwarden has a historic city centre with more than 800 monuments and exceptional modern architecture. And all this is just within an hour and a half drive of Amsterdam. In the run-up to this special year many cultural events and surprising projects will be organized. An excellent time to visit Friesland. And not only in 2018. Also today Friesland has a lot to offer. A province with unique and delightful traditions.

The town Dokkum is well known as the location where the missionary Saint Boniface was murdered in 754. Next to the often visited Boniface spring, chapel and church, there are plenty of sights to visit in the historic center of this Frisian town. The highlights definitely are the old city hall, ‘de Waegh’ and the beautiful canals. A walking tour in Dokkum does not only take you to these locations, but also to the turning point of the Frisian eleven cities tour, which your guide can also tell you more about, the bulwarks that surround the town’s center, historic churches and houses and more.
