Mata Hari (1876 – 1917) was a Dutch exotic dancer and courtesan. In her heyday in Paris, she was famous and desired throughout Europe. But her life ended tragically, because the French accused her of spying and executed her during World War I. If you want to know more about the life story of Mata Hari, you should visit the Fries Museum in Leeuwarden. The museum has one room fully dedicated to the world famous Mata Hari. Her story has inspired many filmmakers and her life was symbolic for the decline of Europe at that time.
The reproductions of M.C. Escher hang in living rooms worldwide. Not so strange, because the Leeuwarder born graphic artist, was one of the most popular artists of the twentieth century. Escher’s work will burst into bloom during an exhibition in the Fries Museum. Maurits Cornelis Escher was an absolute master in drawing impossible situations and optical illusions.
A citywalk through Leeuwarden is an excellent idea to discover this beautiful city. Leeuwarden has a city center with canals and mounds (man-made hills) dating from the middle ages. Old store fronts and beautifully restored monuments adorn the city.
Examples of these include the Oldehove a large slanted tower and the Waag an old weighing station in the middle of town. A walking tour through the city center is more than a trip around old buildings. This city has remarkable canals and small streets, cozy shops and interesting museums.
